Stove Top Expresso Maker - Nothing Fancy, But It Still Works. For those of us who don't need a fancy automated answer to everything, there is one bright light in the world - a stove top espresso maker. The stove top espresso maker sold today is the product of an idea that Anfonso Bigletti had in the early 1920's. Bigletti wanted to start manufacturing firm that would make metal household goods. He was particularly interested in using aluminum as his metal of choice. At that time, women in Italy would wash their clothes in a sealed boiler. There was a central pipe that would draw water from the bottom of the boiler up and over the dirty clothes. Bigletti watched this process and realized that it was the same basic principle that could be applied on a much smaller scale to producing a coffee maker. If it worked, he could produce and market a stove top espresso maker that would give Italians the luxury enjoying real espresso coffee in their own homes. AFter several years of tinkering, designing prototypes that worked to different degrees, Bigletti designed and built the first stove top espresso maker that could be economically built and marketed. It was known as the Moka Express.
