System administrators who have (or plan to) implemented a WSUS system may be interested in Virginia Tech's newly open sourced "VT WSUS" project. Currently in production use at VT among faculty and staff on a voluntary basis, its goal is to make WSUS more manageable, functional, and beneficial for any WSUS admin AND their community.

VT WSUS complements Microsoft's WSUS patch solution with a provision-able desktop client, delegated web access to client patch status (4 levels), robust web generated reports (6 default reports), and a data rollup mechanism to collectively aggregate client data from associated WSUS servers that admins can build and tailor to their own environment.

To date, there is over a combined year of programming, debugging, public testing, feedback, and thoughtful documentation in VT WSUS, with a focus on security, stability, and scalability for the WSUS and user computing environment.
